Dec 20 – Mother Night
It is almost Yule, aka Winter Solstice. The days will start lengthening again, and this is when cultures the world over celebrate the return of the light. To honor this time and to help focus myself on each days’ gifts (it’s so hard to overlook spiritual things when mundane life gets tough, at least for me), I decided that I’d post something every day from here until the New Year about various ways to celebrate the returning light. :-)
Information is from Dorothy Morrison’s wonderful book Yule: A Celebration of Light & Warmth:
Today is the Norse festival of Mother Night, also known as ModresNach or Mudda Nacht, which means “Bringer of Prophetic Dreams.” Light a bayberry candle and put a small piece of citrine and bit of mugwort under your pillow. Before going to sleep, ask Mother Night to give you foresight by chanting: “Darkest Mother, Nighttime One; Aid me now that day is done; Bring me dreams that I might see; What You have in store for me.” When you wake up, be sure to write down what you saw! :-)
